There are several options to choose from for a minimalist camping setup, but your three best choices are going to be a tarp, a tent, or a hammock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tarp&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The most basic tarp setup you can use is an a-frame. You\u2019ll want to make sure that you grab one specifically for camping or a similarly lightweight tarp that won\u2019t tear, and then all you need is rope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tie the rope between two trees and drape the tarp overtop. Then put your sleeping bag underneath and&#8230;you\u2019re done! It really doesn\u2019t get easier than that, and it\u2019s also the least expensive option for shelter you\u2019re likely to find. If you would rather not put your sleeping bag right on the ground you can get a second, smaller tarp or sheet to place underneath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The downside to using an a-frame tarp for your shelter is the lack of sides. Tents have been part of standard camping supplies since the 1800s and there\u2019s no reason that a tent wouldn\u2019t work for your minimalist setup.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1-2 man tents are lightweight and relatively easy to pitch, though they are a bit more labor intensive than a tarp. They are also much more likely to keep everything out from moisture and dirt to bugs and animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The one main downside to using a tent is the cost &#8211; Specialized small lightweight tents can run $135+ for a decent brand. It\u2019s very lightweight and folds down to almost nothing, and you don\u2019t have to worry about poles unlike a tent.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A hammock can be just as effective as a tent at keeping the elements out, and since you\u2019re up off the ground you\u2019re less likely to have to deal with animals and bugs. Having said that, they do tend to get colder than tents and you may wake up to find you are literally freezing your buns off.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something to keep in mind with hammocks is that they can be setup intensive. First off you have to be in a wooded area and the trees have to be the right spacing for your gear. Fortunately there are multiple ways to purify your water supply that won\u2019t take up too much space in your pack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Compact Filters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These really are the gold standard for making sure you have clean water. These filters are extremely lightweight and fit in the palm of your hand in most cases, which makes them great for travel and storage. LifeStraw and Sawyer are two such brands with micro compact filters, and they remove over 99% of bacteria and parasites in the water, They also take out many particulates like micro plastics and grit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Compact filters don\u2019t alter the taste of the water and they\u2019re good for roughly 100,000 gallons, which means you can take many, many camping trips before you have to worry about a replacement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The only downside is their cost. Some of them can get very pricey, especially the filters that are already built into a water bottle. The good news is that because of their longevity, you won\u2019t have to worry about buying another one for a while.
